10 Essential Last-Minute Tips for Your Driving Test

The day of your practical driving test is here. You've put in the hours, you've mastered the manoeuvres, and your instructor thinks you're ready. But it's impossible not to feel a surge of nerves. The key now is to manage those nerves and focus on showcasing your skills.

Here are 10 essential last-minute tips to help you get in the right mindset and perform at your best when it matters most.

1. Don't Skip Your Final Lesson Have a final one-hour lesson with your instructor immediately before your test. This isn't the time to learn new things. It's a warm-up session to get you comfortable behind the wheel, practice a manoeuvre, and calm your nerves.

2. Get Your Documents Ready You absolutely must have your UK provisional driving licence with you. The examiner will need to see it. Also, double-check you have your theory test pass certificate, although this is usually checked online now.

3. Fuel Yourself and the Car Have a proper meal about an hour before you leave, but avoid anything too heavy. A banana is a great source of slow-release energy. Also, make sure the car has plenty of fuel!

4. It's Not a Race The test is not about speed. It's about safety and control. Drive at a speed that is appropriate for the road and the conditions. Don't feel pressured to rush by other drivers.

5. "I've Made a Mistake, I've Failed" - No, You Haven't! This is the single most important tip. If you make a mistake—stall the car, take a wrong turn, brush the kerb on a manoeuvre—do not assume you have failed. * A driving test allows for up to 15 minor driving faults. * The examiner is looking at how you recover from the mistake. Stalled? Secure the car, take a breath, and restart safely. * Just keep driving to the best of your ability until the examiner tells you the test is over.

6. There's No "Secret Quota" Examiners don't have a pass/fail quota. If you demonstrate that you are a safe and competent driver according to the standards set by the DVSA, you will pass. It's that simple.

7. Use Your Mirrors. Then Use Them Again. It's impossible to check your mirrors too much. Every time you change speed or direction, check your mirrors. Before signalling, before braking, before turning. Exaggerate your head movements slightly to make it obvious to the examiner what you are doing.

8. Don't Be Afraid to Ask for Clarification If you don't understand an instruction, ask the examiner to repeat it. It's much better to ask for clarification than to guess and do the wrong thing. They are allowed to repeat the instruction.

9. A Commentary Drive Can Help If it helps you focus, talk yourself through what you are doing in a quiet voice. "Okay, checking my mirrors... approaching a roundabout... a cyclist on my left... I'm giving way to the car from the right..." This verbal commentary can keep your mind focused on the task at hand. It also shows the examiner your thought process.

10. Believe in Yourself Your instructor wouldn't have told you to book your test if you weren't ready. You have the skills. The test is your opportunity to show them off. Visualise yourself being told you've passed.

And if it doesn't go your way? It's not the end of the world. Find out what to do if you fail your driving test and book another one. Many safe drivers don't pass the first time. The important thing is to learn from it and try again. Good luck!
