What is Pass Plus and Should You Take It?
Congratulations, you've passed your driving test and you've got your full licence! It's an amazing feeling. But as you'll quickly discover, the learning doesn't stop there. Driving independently for the first time can be nerve-wracking, especially in situations you may not have fully covered in your lessons, like driving on a motorway or at night.
This is where Pass Plus comes in. It's a practical training course designed specifically for new drivers to build their skills and confidence. This guide explains what the scheme involves and helps you decide if it's right for you.
What is Pass Plus?
Pass Plus is a government-backed scheme, developed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA). It's a course of at least six hours of practical training taken with a qualified Pass Plus registered approved driving instructor (ADI).
The focus is on areas of driving that you may not have been able to cover as a learner. There is no test at the end of it; your instructor will assess you throughout the modules and sign off on your training report when you have reached the required standard.
What Are the Six Pass Plus Modules?
The course is broken down into six modules, designed to give you experience in a range of challenging conditions.
- Town Driving: This module focuses on complex urban driving, including under- and over-ground trams, bus lanes, and multi-lane junctions.
- All-Weather Driving: You'll learn how to handle your car safely in heavy rain, snow, ice, and fog, learning about skidding and how to avoid it. This builds on the theory of driving in adverse weather.
- Driving on Rural Roads: Tackles the specific challenges of country roads, such as sharp bends, passing places, and dealing with slow-moving farm vehicles or animals.
- Night Driving: For many new drivers, their first time driving in the dark is after they pass. This module covers the correct use of headlights, adjusting to different levels of light, and judging speed and distance.
- Driving on Dual Carriageways: Focuses on joining, leaving, overtaking, and maintaining safe distances on high-speed, multi-lane roads.
- Driving on Motorways: Perhaps the most valuable module. It covers joining and leaving motorways, overtaking, lane discipline, and handling a breakdown. It's the perfect practical follow-up to our guide on motorway driving rules.
You can find a full overview of the modules on the official GOV.UK Pass Plus page.
What Are the Benefits of Pass Plus?
- Builds Confidence: The number one benefit is the structured experience you gain under the guidance of a professional instructor. You'll become a more confident and assured driver.
- Develops Essential Skills: You will be a safer, more observant driver, better equipped to handle a wide range of road and traffic conditions.
- Potential Car Insurance Discounts: This is a big one. Many UK insurance companies offer a discount on your premium when you complete the Pass Plus course. The discount can often be more than the cost of the course itself, making it a very worthwhile investment. When getting quotes for your first car insurance, always ask if they offer a Pass Plus discount.
Is Pass Plus Right for You?
If you are a newly qualified driver who feels nervous about driving alone, or you want to fast-track your experience in a safe environment, then Pass Plus is an excellent choice. The combination of increased safety, boosted confidence, and a potential reduction in your insurance premium makes it a logical next step on your journey to becoming a skilled and safe driver for life.
